listing the condition as non functioning due to repairs needed. I’d rate the overall cosmetic condition good for its age but its in non functional shape due to repairs it needs-which is likely a neck reset and some glue repair.
In 1964 this model was the top tier classical guitar for Epiphone and was never surpassed. This model was made from 1963-1968 shortly after epiphone moved production to Japan and never made classicals at this level of quality again. This guitar requires repair, at and after the 12th fret the action gets higher, before that the action isn’t as high. I’ve made no attempt to lower this. I’ve been told by someone that is not a professional repairman but much more experienced with acoustics then I am that it could use a neck reset. It also has some seams of the body that have come unglued. At nearly 60 it’s in need of TLC that most acoustics of its age end up needing and I’ll detail more in this ad what i know about it but acoustics are not my speciality so please ask questions. I’ve included photos of the body to show condition of the seams and also multiple photos of the side profile of the action so you can see after the 12th fret it’s getting higher and i was told the repair for this was a neck reset.
These were produced in very small numbers and you won’t often see 2 for sale at the same time because of this. These guitars were made at the Kalamazoo Michigan plant which I suspect most of you know is where Gibsons at that time were made right next to them. Epiphones at that time were not inferior guitars but equals and show extreme levels of quality craftsmanship and detail. I’ve been lucky enough to own a few from this era (a ‘64 electric I’m holding onto) and they are exceptionally well made instruments with quality woods. This model is the EC-300 Barcelone. It’s made of very nice woods with a spruce top and curly maple back and sides. Black bound body with fan bracing and 14.25" width and a 4" body depth. Nicely carved rosewood bridge with bone saddle, flush with the body no lifting. The neck is 1-piece mahogany with french heel and rosewood fingerboard- I believe Brazilian rosewood was used in ‘64. Well seated and cut nut. Plate mounted gold tuning machines with Pearl buttons. Has standard 25.5 inch scale. Has a great sound that is loud and warm.
At 59 years of age it does show some graceful aging which to me enhances the look. The neck is in excellent shape , clean rear playing area , some slight tarnish patina to the tuning machines - not effecting performance. The nut and frets are in excellent shape having worn nylon strings always. The body finish on the back and sides is very clean overall with minor wear. The top finish however shows lots of finish checking - not cracks but checking occurring due to age and nitro lacquered finish. I took some photos in the dark with flash to dramatically show the checking as my outdoor photos didn’t show it as well. You’ll also notice above the low E string near the bridge a spot of worn finish from someone’s hand resting. Their has been some separation of the body halves where they meet at the bottom of the guitar. This wouldn’t be a crack as the wood hasn’t been damaged but where the guitar halves of the body met and were glued it appears that at one point they separated and were glued back together - or perhaps just touched up with glue slightly. I see this on the edge this may of happened and was glued without issue. However on the bottom it appears the reglue has again separated slightly, their is some give where I can push the bowed wood inwards slightly. I’ve opted to leave it as is, knowing that it can be repaired at anytime. One should assume in the future it would be advised to glue it back but for now ive enjoyed it as is. I’ve taken detailed photos of this area as I want to be transparent about this. It’s a very nice guitar and you are welcome to check it out for yourself. The action is comfortable in the cowboy chord areas and is playable all the way up the neck as it doesn’t take much force to push the strings down even above the 12th fret but around there the action is higher up the fretboard. It will need some work as I’ve stated. It needs some gluing and as I said probably a neck reset. Given the work mine needs I’m pricing it with that in consideration. Please do not purchase this without that understanding, I’ve priced mine at half what I saw another sell for.
Included is a non original Tolex hard case that’s in good shape and fits the guitar very well and snug.
